How to burn a bootable ISO image of Windows XP? Creating boot disks with Windows XP Burning a windows xp installation flash drive

In this article I want to tell you howburn Windows XP disc, Windows 7 so that it would be possible to install an operating system on your computer from it. It is recorded from an image downloaded from the Internet or created by yourself.

An image is a file, in this case, on which the operating system distribution is assembled. Such files are in most cases in *ISO format.

This image contains folders with Windows installation files. It will not be correct if you simply write this file to disk.
And so let’s write the image to disk, I will use the UltraISO program, and as an example I will show how this is done using the Alcohol 120% program.

Burn a Windows disc using UltraISO.

We find our pre-prepared Windows distribution image. Right-click on it and select UltraISO, burn to disk. In the window that opens, we can select CD\DVD –RW, the actual device that will record the disc, the recording speed and the actual button to start recording.

In the window that opens, we can select CD\DVD –RW, the actual device that will record the disc, the recording speed and the actual button to start recording.

After burning, the disc will be completely ready for installing Windows.

Burn a Windows disc using Alcohol 120%

And so we tear off the pre-prepared image using Alcohol 120%.

In the window that opens, select our file and right-click.Select the Image Burning Wizard tab, if you have the Russified version of Alcohol 120%, then it sounds like “Disc Burning Wizard”.

The next item is to click “Next” or for the Russian version “Next”. After this, a window will appear in which you should click “Start”

Many modern computers no longer have disk drives. This is due to the fact that DVD and CD devices are outdated; more modern solutions are actively taking their place. Reasons why many people refuse drives:

  1. Unnecessary, since all information is copied and transmitted via the global Internet or using USB devices;
  2. The drive takes up a lot of space. This drawback is very relevant in compact netbooks and Ultra PC laptops;
  3. Using and burning discs is not the safest or most convenient way to store and distribute information.

Despite the above disadvantages, many software developers send their software products on CD or DVD discs. This is especially true for operating systems that are not designed for installation from solid-state drives.

Installing Windows XP from a USB device

The Windows XP operating system is one of the most common and popular systems. Its standard installation is only possible from disk or over the network. Therefore, in order to create a bootable USB flash drive with an operating system, you will need to do the following yourself:

  1. Copy and unpack the Windows XP OS image to the hard drive;
  2. Prepare a flash drive with a capacity of at least one gigabyte;
  3. Register the bootloader on the flash drive;
  4. Copy all OS files to a USB flash drive.

At first glance, the simple and uncomplicated steps of creating a boot device are fraught with quite a few additional problems, especially with regard to the bootloader. It is its correct configuration that will allow the device to function correctly as a boot disk from which the OS will be installed. For this reason, it is worth abandoning manual creation of a bootable USB flash drive and moving to a more modern semi-automated solution: Win Setup From USB. The utility is free and multifunctional.

Selecting and preparing media for boot record porting

You need to choose a flash drive based on two rules:

  1. The device must have high read and write speeds. USB 3.0 flash drives fit perfectly and are recognized by the vast majority of controllers;
  2. The capacity of the flash drive must be more than one gigabyte.

All important information must first be copied from the flash drive, as it will be deleted. Before starting the installation, it is recommended to disconnect other USB storage devices so as not to accidentally format them.

Media preparation steps:

  1. To get started, run the program as an administrator (in Windows Vista and later) the Win Setup From USB utility.
  2. Select the desired USB device from the top panel;
  3. Click the “Bootice” button to launch the utility for preliminary preparation of partitions and boot record on a flash drive;
  4. Click the “Part Manage” button to enter the menu for viewing and creating partitions on the device;
  5. Click on the “ReFormat USB disk” button;
  6. Set the values USB-HDD mode (single partition) and Align to cylinder, then click the “Next” button;
  7. You will be prompted to format the drive. Select FAT32 or NTFS file system. This is not important, since the OS image does not contain files larger than four gigabytes. The name of the flash drive can be left blank or filled in. Then click “OK”;
  8. A warning will pop up indicating that you have initiated formatting of the device. Click “OK” again. The flash drive will begin to format;
  9. After formatting, the program will display a message indicating a successful result;
  10. Close all windows except the “Bootice” utility window and the main program window;
  11. Now you need to prepare the master boot record for writing to the flash drive. To do this, click on the “Process MBR” button;
  12. In the menu that opens, select the bootloader “GRUB4DOS 0.4.5b” and click the “Install/Config” button;
  13. When a message appears stating that you have initiated the creation of an MBR record, click “OK”;
  14. Upon completion of creation, the system will display a success message;
  15. Close the “Master Boot Record” window and go to the “Bootice” tool;
  16. Click the “Process PBR” button. At the moment, you will write the boot partition directly to the flash drive;
  17. Select the bootloader “Grub4Dos 0.4.5b” and click the “Install/Config” button;
  18. The bootloader menu will open. Do not change anything in it, click the “Save to disk” button, and the “OK” button in the pop-up dialog box that opens;
  19. Close all support utilities except the main Win Setup From USB window

Boot sector and recording configuration and recording is complete.

You can install Windows on a flash drive for different purposes. For example, recording an installation image will lead to the creation of an installation “keychain,” and copying a LIVE assembly will allow you to load a full-fledged working environment from a flash drive, intended for tests and repair work. This article will look at both methods.

Installing a live build of Windows WP on a USB flash drive

If you have extra storage media, be sure to take care of creating a Live USB device in advance. In case of any problem, you can boot Windows from it, even if the system does not boot from the hard drive. For further work we will need:

  • Flash drive with a capacity of at least 1 GB. (Live builds of Windows XP “weigh” from 600 MB, but the size can fluctuate in any direction);
  • a special image of Windows XP, for example RAM WinXp Live CD/USB Edition, RusLiveFull_CD\DVD or any other that you consider best;
  • The recording program is WinSetupFromUSB, on the official website it exists in x64 or x32 versions (choose for your PC).

The process itself will take a few minutes and does not require any complex manipulations from the user:

  • We connect the flash drive to the system unit (preferably USB 2.0), saving in advance any data from it that you may need (they will be erased during the recording process).
  • Launch the WinSetupFromUSB program.
  • In the first field at the top (“Usb disk selection…”) select our media.
  • Under it, leave the “auto format” checkboxes checked, select the file system type - for example NTFS, check the “align” and “copy BPB” checkboxes.
  • We also check the box next to the line “Other Grub4dos compatible ISO”, and from “Browse” select the path where the system image is located.
  • Click on the “GO” button and wait for the recording to finish without closing the program or removing the flash drive.
  • When the “Job done” window appears on the screen, the device is ready to load Win XP.
  • After restarting the computer, press the key to select the disk to boot (F8, F11 or F12).
  • In the “Boot menu” we select our flash memory.
  • Depending on the selected build, Windows XP with a graphical shell may not load immediately. Using RusLiveFull_DVD as an example: in the loader window select RusLiveFull_DVD from partition, in the next window select Multimedia.
  • When the system boots, it is completely ready for use.

If our goal is not testing, but installing a new Windows, a lot depends on the specific build that we selected in the first point. At the moment, there are versions of images that allow you to boot a Live system from media and install Windows from scratch. The principle of creating an installation “key fob” is similar to the instructions given above. Only the installation image and the line in which it must be specified will differ - the first one in the “Add to USB” menu, designated “Windows 2000\XP\2003 Setup”. If you have enough space on your device, WinSetupFromUSB will allow you to burn several ISO images - just check the boxes at the same time.

How to make a reliable boot disk for Windows XP

Another very pressing question is how to properly make a boot or installation disk with Windows version XP, let's figure it out. Despite the fact that Windows XP is already obsolete, it is quite suitable for weak computers and laptops.

Windows XP is not much different in terms of functions needed by a home user from, for example, the new Windows 7, 8, 10 (). This suggests that Windows XP is a completely normal and modern operating system that supports almost all the same functions as, for example, Windows 7.

Introduction

It’s just that with the release of the new Windows 7, it is necessary to somehow “relocate” users from the already familiar Windows XP, and this is done by stopping its technical support.

And it so happens that over time, Windows XP on a computer or laptop begins to work slowly, generate errors, or simply some viruses have crippled its work. As a result, you have to reinstall it or install it on a weak computer or laptop.

This is not very difficult to do, but you need a Windows XP boot disk, from which it will be reinstalled; we will discuss this issue below.

And so first the list of what we need:

  • An image of Windows XP (what is a Windows XP image - an image is a virtual copy of it, how to make a disk image), that is, at first Windows was on the disk, then they made a virtual copy from it to the computer, and they didn’t just copy it, but made an image, The image is created using special programs. And then from this virtual image you can even just burn it to disk, you can make a boot disk out of it, whereby the image is made of absolutely any disk, for example with a game, you need an image of a game disk, for example, in order not to insert the disk into the drive if the game requires it at startup.)
  • blank cd or dvd
  • a program for creating a boot disk (in this article we will use such an interesting and convenient program for working with disks as UltraISO)

And so we will continue how to properly make a high-quality boot disk with Windows XP.

Let's start with the Windows XP image, where can we get it?

You can ask your friends, or you can download it on the Internet. I won’t give download links, just type in any search engine “download windows XP image”, and I recommend downloading from the largest torrent tracker using the µTorrent program (read this article for how to download files from torrent trackers using it), There are guaranteed to be no viruses and the image will be fully functional.

Well, I think you also prepared a blank disk.

Now about the UltraISO program

Follow this link, you will see a list in front of you, find “Russian” and click on the green arrow on this line, a window will appear with the option to choose where on your computer to download this program, you can select to the desktop, although if it is Mozilla FireFox, then the file will be downloaded to the standard download folder on the C drive:

After you have downloaded the UltraISO program to your computer, you need to install it. Find the downloaded file and run it and click “Next”. In the window that appears, put “I accept the terms of the agreement” and click “Next”:

Now in this window the installation program offers to change the location where the program will be installed; you don’t have to change anything; the standard installation path suits us perfectly:

Create a boot disk

When you first launch the program, you will be asked to enter a key or buy it; we will take another option - this is a trial period. This period is enough for us to make a Windows XP boot disk:

Now, since everything is prepared, we proceed directly to creating a Windows XP boot disk. Open the UltraIso program, then the file, then open it. In the window that appears, find the Windows XP image to burn to disk:

In the window that appears, we make the following settings: in the drive field - you need to make sure that it is your DVD-RW, and not something else, well, in general, it is usually automatically installed, but we still check that it is DVD-RW... instead dots the name of your drive.

In the “Write speed” field we set the minimum speed, this is necessary for better recording of the image to disk and finally click “Record”:

In general, that’s it, after recording is complete, a high-quality installation disk with the Windows xp operating system will be ready, from which you can reinstall it, both on a slow computer and on a laptop.

About using utilities such as Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool and WinToFlash. Today I will give step-by-step instructions for creating a bootable USB flash drive for Windows XP using the UltraISO image burning program.

The skill of installing an operating system from a flash drive can be useful, since ultrabooks and many budget laptop models today are not equipped with DVD drives (read about creating a bootable XP disk using Nero Burning ROM). And, unfortunately, you cannot rely entirely on computer hardware such as a DVD drive. Many drives refuse to read some brands of discs, scratched or worn discs. A flash drive is still a more reliable storage medium, and, moreover, is hundreds of times more resistant to repeated use, unlike a rewritable disk.

Many people simply do not know how to create a bootable USB flash drive. If you simply copy the image with the operating system onto a flash drive, the latter will not become bootable, the computer will not boot from it, and Windows will not install. How to make a bootable USB flash drive with Windows?

Is it possible to boot from a flash drive?

Naturally, the possibility of booting a computer from a flash drive must be clarified before proceeding with all the steps listed below.

Make sure your computer's BIOS supports booting from USB devices. Enter the BIOS and go to the boot priority setting menu - “First Boot Device”, which is located in the “Advanced BIOS” or “Boot” section, depending on the BIOS version. The “First Boot Device” menu should contain the “USB-HDD” option - this is an external hard drive connected via a USB port, which is a flash drive. This point most likely applies to older machines, since almost all new computer devices necessarily provide the ability to boot from a flash drive.

The “USB-HDD” option is in the “First Boot Device” menu of the BIOS and will need to be selected during Windows installation from a bootable USB flash drive.

UltraISO is a simple and convenient program for creating bootable media

UltraISO is a highly focused and quite functional program that, in addition to creating and burning ISO files, also allows you to edit disk images, changing their contents. Its main feature, which is of value in our case, is the ability to create bootable media - disks and flash drives. Plus, UltraISO is equipped with a function for converting image files into ISO format if the disk image of your operating system is recorded in a different format - for example, “.BIN”, “.NRG”, “.CIF”, “.IMG” or ".BWI".

UltraISO has a simple and intuitive interface that will not cause you any difficulties if you have worked with disc burning programs. Ideally, the program is paid, however, if you are not new to computer technology, moreover, you know how to install the operating system yourself, it will not be difficult for you to find a “cured” version of UltraISO on torrent trackers.

If you have a bootable CD/DVD for installing Windows, but do not have an ISO image of it, UltraISO will solve this problem very easily. Insert the disc into the drive, launch the program and in the top “Tools” menu select the “Create CD image” command. In the window that appears, you must leave all the settings unchanged, just indicate the location where you want to save the ISO image of the boot disk.

Click the "Make" command and wait a couple of minutes while the program creates the image.

Creating a bootable USB flash drive

Finally, the main question of this article is actually creating a bootable flash drive.

You must insert a blank flash drive into the USB port. In the case of Windows 7, the flash drive must be at least 4 GB in size; for Windows XP, 1 GB will be enough, unless, of course, it is a homemade assembly with built-in software.

Launch the UltraISO program and select the “File” - “Open” menu.

Open the image file with your operating system in ISO format.

In the top menu of the Bootstrap program window, select the “Burn Hard Disk Image” command.

In the window that appears, without making any changes, click the “Burn” command. After this, a warning will appear that all data on the specified media - i.e., on a flash drive - will be erased. You must confirm the decision to record by clicking the “Yes” command.

All that remains is to wait for the recording process to complete. That's it - the flash drive has become bootable.
